FDA approves Cialis for enlarged prostate treatment

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized Cialis medication to be used as a therapy for enlarge prostate.

The enlarged prostate medical condition is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH and according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health represents a typical aging characteristic in males. The National Institutes of Health evaluated that about 50% of men in their 60s-65s, and approximately 90 % in their 70s and 80s, have some signs of enlarge prostate.

If not treated properly, BPH may lead to uncontrolled urination or urinary incontinence. The condition greatly enlarges the chances for urinary tract infections and even kidney failure.

Enlarge prostate impairs a patient’s quality of life so most older men who have symptoms of BPH and erectile dysfunction are offered a new treatment option – Cialis which can help both problems.

The FDA has made its approval based on three large studies. Two of the studies investigated the alterations in BPH symptom severity according to the International Prostate Symptom Score. The studies demonstrated that men who took the dose of Cialis of 5 mg one a day had an improvement in BPH symptoms in comparison with the participants who received placebo.

The last study involved males who suffered from impotence and BPH. The results were that the daily Cialis 5mg enhanced both conditions.

ED prefaces heart diseases and stroke

A recent study involving more than 740 participants reported that great general and sexual health enhancements were noted after the men altered their lifestyle for the healthier. The amazing results of the study were published in the Archives of Internal Medicine and contained recommendations for men suffering from ED. Men with sexual problems are advised to keep normal weight with a help of a nutritious diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables, to make regular exercise and stop smoking and alcohol drinking.

The study has made a conclusion that males in the age of 30 – 50, and experience potency problems should be examined by a doctor. Due to the fact that the health improvements and the ED afflictions are closely associated with cardiovascular health, a more serious problem that could result in heart attack, stroke, or sudden death can be prevented.

Fortunately many men become more motivated by the state of their general and sexual health, making these simple changes will obviously enhance the heart health of many. This approach may also lessen the need for expensive oral medications for ED treatment.

Natural supplements and foods improving sexual health can become alternatives to medications, most of which have side effects and contraindications. If these supplements used in combination with healthy lifestyle habits, men with ED condition may see that they are not only performing better in bed, but also improving general health and thus living longer.

Lifestyle improvements

Lots of discoveries concerning male sexual function enhancement have made scientists to think that choosing a healthier lifestyle may be the best option for men with impotence. These improvements are not only effective for treating ED, but also for keeping heart health.

For many men with ED problems such simple lifestyle improvements as quitting smoking, exercising regularly, losing excess weight, curtailing excessive alcohol consumption, controlling hypertension, and optimizing blood glucose levels can help to enhance the situation with erectile function or even help overcome the problem completely.

For patients with diabetes these improvements are not only essential for maintaining good health but also may improve or prevent impotence. Several studies suggest that males with ED who have altered their lifestyle have more chances to improve their sexual function. Lifestyle improvements also increase rates of success with oral medications such as Cialis.

Besides all these necessary changes it is important to get plenty of rest and take time to relax.

Experts are sure that open discussion with a partner about sex and relationship is also very important. If it is difficult, sex counseling is the best way out for some couples.

Recent studies have suggested that ED may be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease so many doctors motivate patients to adopt the recommended lifestyle changes. It is evaluated that ED may precede heart disease or stroke by about five years.

Adjusting medications

There are many medications for treating different medical conditions such as hypertension, depression, MPHL (male pattern hair loss) and high blood lipids which may have side effects affecting erectile function. For instance, the medications to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) such as beta-blockers, diuretics increasing urine volume, calcium channel blockers, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors), and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs).

The medications to treat high blood pressure are used alone or in complex therapy to normalize blood pressure. Different medicines to control blood pressure influence differently on erectile function. Inderal (a beta blocker) and a diuretic hydrochlorothiazide used in combination can contribute to the development of erectile dysfunction.  Other antihypertensive drugs such as calcium channel blockers and ACE inhibitors while do not cause impotence. Such drugs as angiotensin receptor blockers may have the opposite effect on sexual function – they may improve sexual desire and performance, and  even help decrease erectile dysfunction. So when a person chooses a proper drug combination  for hypertension treatment it is important  to take into consideration the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Common Erectile Dysfunction Treatments

There are many treatment options for erectile dysfunction which your doctor may offer you to try. You should work with your doctor to find the most effective method for you.   In addition to the medical or any other treatment you should make certain life style improvements such as quitting smoking if you smoke, having more exercises, keeping your weight under control. This will help to improve your health in general and enhance the situation with your ED.

4.     Vacuum constrictive devices for the penis.

5.     Psychotherapy.

6.     Penile prostheses.

Prostate surgery and impotence

Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that forms in tissues of the prostate. Prostate organ is a gland in the male reproductive system located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Older men are more vulnerable to develop prostate cancer. Prostate cancer treatment may involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and vaccine therapy.
Prostate cancer is not a direct cause of erectile dysfunction, but the treatments for this disease can cause impotence in men. The afflictions of ED may be the surgery to remove the whole prostate gland, radiation therapy, cryosurgery by freezing cancerous tissue and hormone therapy.
Treatments for prostate cancer can lead to ED; some of them can cause impotence sooner than others.
One of these treatments is called surgery and radical prostatectomy cancer procedure. This procedure may lead to impotence because of the damage made by cutting to the cavernous nerve surrounding the prostate.
The cavernous nerve is responsible for the ability to get an erection when sexually aroused. If this cavernous nerve is damaged the sexual life comes to its end.
The severity of impotence if it occurs after this surgery depends on the type of surgery, stage of cancer, and skill of the surgeon. After the surgery using nerve –sparing procedure a man is more likely to reserve his erectile function than after non-nerve-sparing procedure.
The possible long-term complication of radiation therapy is gradual loss of erectile function. The more innovative treatment methods involving radioactive seed implants (brachytherapy), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), and 3-D conformal radiotherapy make it possible to lessen the risk of development of ED.
Hormone therapy is characterized mostly by the decreased sexual desire.

High blood pressure and ED

It is proved that high blood pressure or hypertension leads to impotence in men.

The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society published the results of the recent study according to which approximately about 49% of men of 40 to 75 years of old with hypertension had erectile problem. In 45% of the men with hypertension ED has a severe character.

High blood pressure prevents the blood vessels carrying blood into the penis from widening the way they should expand. It also negates the relaxation process of the smooth muscle in the penis. This follows by insufficient blood flow into the penis and a man is unable to get the penis erect.

Men with high blood pressure often have a low testosterone level. Testosterone -the male hormone plays a significant role in sexual arousal.

Hypertension by itself can cause erectile dysfunction. Besides, some medications for treating high blood pressure (such as diuretics and beta-blockers) may also lead to impotence.

Getting control of the blood pressure helps to improve the situation with erectile function. A healthy lifestyle and following your doctor’s recommendations will aid to restore normal sexual life and make your general health better.

Priapism or prolonged erection

Priapism is a condition that causes a prolonged and usually painful penile erection, which can last for 4-6 hours. This condition is characterized by involuntary prolonged penile erection which is unrelieved by ejaculation.

The causes of this condition can be different by nature but in all the cases priapism requires medical assistance. Remember that early medical help allows the best chance for functional recovery.

The prolonged erection can be caused by neurological disorders, obstruction of the penile blood vessels, sickle cell disease, pelvic tumors, pelvic infections, leukemia, genital trauma or spinal cord trauma. Recreational drugs and oral ED therapies belonging to the drug class of PDE 5 inhibitors may also cause priapism.

The prolonged erection can be arranged into two groups:  ischemic (no-flow) or non-ischemic (high-flow).

Ischemic priapism is the most frequent form of prolonged erection.  The condition may last for several hours and even days. Ischemic priapism needs immediate medical assistance. The treatment helps to prevent the complete damage of the penis and impotence.

Non-ischemic priapism is afflicted by damage to the penis.  This condition may be not painful; however it requires medical treatment because the damaged artery results in inflow of large amount of blood to the penis.

Stress factor for developing ED

Stress in our modern lives is a common thing. From a biological point of view, stress can be a neutral, negative, or positive experience.

Negative stress can demonstrate a variety of emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms. Common physical symptoms include: sleep disturbances, muscle tension, muscle aches, gastrointestinal disturbances, fatigue and sexual problems. Emotional and behavioral symptoms are nervousness, overeating, mood changes, sexual performance anxiety, and depression.

People under stress tend to be addicted to something: food, cigarette smoking, abuse of alcohol and drugs. These unhealthy habits increase the severity of symptoms associated with stress and other conditions that stress provokes.

Stress affects people of all ages. The severity of stress is highly dependent on physical health, the state of relationships, expectations of us, if there is any support from our family, friends or partners, and other events. Males are vulnerable to stress in some periods of their lives, especially stressful situations for men are those when they cannot perform well in bed.

It is proved that stress can affect any organ system and provoke skin rashes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, certain gastrointestinal diseases, and problems with erections.

Constant stress has a very negative impact on our physical and mental health. Stress is a natural mechanism but if stress becomes negative and dangerous for people’s health, it should be treated. If you cannot cope with stress by yourself, ask psychotherapist for help. This helps you to understand the “nature” of your stress and overcome it.

Diabetes and impotence

Diabetes mellitus is rather common disease for people older than 40 years. The disease has a negative impact on all organs and systems, besides it causes a decrease in potency.

If you have the following conditions, you may be suffering from undiagnosed diabetes:

  • If you are overweight.
  • If you have a constant thirst or hunger.
  • If your pressure is high.
  • If your sight gets worse.

The earlier the diagnosis and treatment is started, the easier it is to avoid complications.

Diabetes affects many organs and nerve system, including tiny blood vessels within genital sphere. Often, it happens so that a man notices a decrease in his sexual abilities first, seeks medical attention and only after that diabetes is diagnosed.  Diabetes in the early stages may cause no symptoms.
Diabetes causes different organs in such a way that they cannot fully perform their functions.
The nervous system beside other functions answers for normal erections and the tone of the urinary tract. When nervous system is affected by diabetes, neuropathy appears.  Neuropathy leads to erectile dysfunction, male’s inability to have and sustain erections.

High blood sugar levels reduce the level of testosterone and this leads to a decrease of libido (sex drive) and erectile dysfunction.

The vessels become narrow and rigid. So the blood supply of pelvic organs and penis suffers arousal and erections become weaker.

Diabetes is a serious disease, but you may prevent development of complications and stop the decline in potency and maintain overall health.  Consult your doctor regularly and follow all his prescriptions. Get rid of unhealthy habits (smoking, alcohol), try to move actively, walk on the open air, to reduce the weight, keep a diet, and avoid stress. Take your medication for diabetes treatment regularly to avoid fluctuations glucose level in blood. With these simple changes in your lifestyle you will improve the potency and quality of sexual life.
